Engineering student gets RI for killing youth over canteen chair

The district sessions court on Wednesday awarded rigorous life imprisonment (RI) to Baba Shankar Gir Colony resident Amarinder Singh, 22, for murdering fellow student Jaspreet Singh during a brawl over a chair in the canteen at Thapar Polytechnic College.


Sessions judge RS Attri also imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000, non-payment of which would lead to additional imprisonment of three months.

On October 19, 2011, Jaspreet's father Ram Singh had filed a police complaint, alleging that Amarinder, who was pursuing a degree in electronics and communication, and his son, enrolled in a diploma course in computer science, had killed his son by stabbing him in the chest with a dagger after a verbal altercation over a chair in the college canteen.

Amarinder had threatened Jaspreet, who called his father and narrated the incident. Ram Singh told him to stay calm and reached the canteen, after which Amarinder stabbed Jaspreet and fled the spot.

Jaspreet was taken to Columbia Asia hospital, where he was declared brought dead.The case was registered on the same day.
