Ex-husband's kin throw acid on woman in Nabha

A Nabha woman was injured after the family of her ex-husband allegedly threw acid on her here, as she refused to give custody of her son after the divorce.

Manju Dhir, 40, alleged that the accused, three members of her estranged in-laws attacked her with knives and tried to kill her, but when they failed, they threw acid on her.

They threw her in some bushes along the Nabha-Patiala Road. Passersby informed the police, who took her to the hospital.

A source said some passersby informed the police on Monday afternoon that a woman was lying unconscious with acid burn injuries near the Rohati Bridge.

The victim sustained up to 50% burns on her body and is undergoing treatment at Rajindra Medical College and Government Hospital at Patiala, where she was referred to from the local civil hospital, where she was administrated first aid.

After gaining consciousness, Manju told police that three people who had covered their faces tried to kidnap her.

"From their voices, I recognised my former brother-in-law Vikar Dhir, who had tried to attack me earlier too," she alleged.

She alleged that her in-laws were demanding the custody of her son Raghav Dhir, who was staying with her after her divorce. "The accused had attacked me at Nabha twice to press me to give them custody of my son," she added.

Bakshiwala police station station house officer Rajesh Chibber the police was waiting for the doctor's permission to record the victim's statement. "Her condition is now stable. Once we register the case, we will launch a manhunt to nab the accused," he added.
