In a major breakthrough to check the sale of illegal arms in the region, the local police on Friday claimed to have busted a racket with the arrest of a man and his son, residents of Uttar Pradesh.

SSP Gurpeet Singh Gill said the police seized four 32-mm 'US made' pistols, one 9-mm pistol, two country made pistols and 15 cartridges.

The suspects, Shayad Ahmad and son Abdul Majeed, were arrested during a naka in Urban Estate Phase 1 on Friday. The duo was travelling in blue Maruti car having Delhi number.

The SSP said the preliminary investigations have revealed that Ahmad has three wives and 15 children and most of his sons help him in running the illegal trade of guns. The SSP said Ahmad was a history-sheeter and was out on bail pertaining to a drugs case lodged in Ludhiana district.

“To ascertain if the weapons were actually foreign-made, we have decided to send them for forensic examination,” he said.

The father-son duo has been booked under the Arms Act at the Urban Estate police station. “We are investigating the source of these arms and to whom they were to be supplied,” the SSP said.
