On the complaint of a woman, the local police on Wednesday have booked her husband and mother-in-law for forcing her to undergo an abortion. The police have also booked a doctor and staff of a clinic.

Deputy superintendent of police Gurpreet Singh Dhindsa said the complainant, Jyoti, alleged that her husband Naresh Bansal and mother-in-law Shanta Rani forcibly gave her some pills to terminate her eight-week pregnancy.

Jyoti alleged that after giving her pills, she was taken to local Grewal health centre, where she underwent an abortion.

No arrests have been made in the case so far, the DSP said.

However, civil surgeon Dr HS Bali said a team of doctors immediately reached the private clinic to get stock of the situation. “As per ultrasound reports, it seems to be a case of early pregnancy due to which doctors had to perform an abortion. The team has also verified documents and records of clinic and found that the doctor and the clinic are authorized to carry medical termination of pregnancy (MTP),” he said.

Dr Bali said they would submit a report to the police, if required.
