Illegal mining: 41 booked in 3 months

Acting on orders from the Punjab and Haryana high court to stop illegal mininig, the district police have registered against 41 people in this regard in the past three months.

Teams had raided many quarries in the state, deputy commissioner GK Singh on Wednesday told the media here. The 41 suspects are named in 18 first-information reports (FIRs) and the police claim to have impounded 27 of their vehicles.

In September, the district police arrested four suspects, and in October they registered a case against 10 and impounded eight vehicles. In November, the police registered cases against another 27 people and impounded 19 vehicles.

The administration will form more teams to check illegal mining in the district. The DC has asked local people for cooperation in curbing the racket.
