Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia, suspended vice-chancellor of SGPC-run Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University on Saturday submitted his resignation to Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) chief Avtar Singh Makkar, who is also chancellor of the university.

Talking to HT, Ahluwalia said he has sent his messenger to hand over the resignation and that he wants to settle the matter amicably.

Meanwhile, a meeting of university trust was held at Kalgidhar Niwas, Chandigarh, under the presidentship of Makkar, who constituted a five-member committee comprising RS Mann, Jaspal Singh, Sukhdev Singh Bhaur, Raghujit Singh Virk and Amarjit Singh to take legal advice and deal with the issue.

The final decision will be taken after receiving the report of the committee, which may come in a week. Sources said the university trust will take legal advice on resignation submitted by Ahluwalia. If the resignation is accepted, the university will have to pay him the service benefits.

The Punjab and Haryana high court had recently dismissed Ahluwalia's petition challenging his suspension. After his suspension from the university on July 31, Ahluwalia had levelled allegations against Makkar.

The university trust had also appointed two audit firms to probe the 'irregularities' during Ahluwalia's tenure and he was found guilty of irregularities in the use of university funds and purchase of construction material.
