The district and sessions court here on Friday sentenced a man to 10 years' imprisonment for raping his sister. The court convicted Mandeep Sharma, a resident of Mandi Gobindgarh, and imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000, which if defaulted on would tantamount to another two years in prison.
A case had been registered against Sharma in December last year, when her blood-sister Sunita (name changed) had approached Mandi Gobindgarh police and accused him of repeatedly raping her.
The victim had told the police that she had been married to a resident of Malerkotla in Sangrur; her brother had visited her in 2006 and had raped her at night. Her husband had snapped all ties with her when he came to know about the incident. Since then she had been forced to live with her brother.
Sunita revealed that she had had three abortions and she was again pregnant. In the meanwhile, Sharma married another girl and banished her from the house.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP), Hardial Singh Mann, had marked an inquiry. The investigating officer (IO) submitted that Sunita had been married in 1997, when she was a minor. As per the IO, Sharma not only raped his sister in 2006 on Diwali night, but also continued it for a long time and the victim was forced to undergo several abortions.
The victim said she could not dare to tell her story to the society initially, but when her brother married another girl and did not allow her to live in his house, she was compelled to raise her voice. On the statement of the victim, a case was registered against Sharma under Sections 376 and 506 of the IPC on December 6, 2012.
