A man was arrested on the charges of abducting and attempting to rape an 8-year-old girl in Kamalpur village near here on Friday.

The accused has been identified as Harjinder Singh, a neighbour of the victim.

Investigation officer Krishan Kumar said the case was registered on the statement of the mother of the victim, after which the accused was arrested.

As per the complaint, Harjinder abducted the girl when she was playing in the street and took her
to his house nearby.

"The accused molested the girl and tried to assault her sexually. He threatened to kill her if she opened her mouth," Kumar said.

The girl, however, narrated the whole incident to her mother, who approached the police.

"Medical examination of the accused and the victim has been conducted," he said.
