With the announcement of former MP Preneet Kaur as the Congress candidate for the Patiala assembly seat vacated by her husband Capt Amarinder Singh, who has been elected to the Lok Sabha, Amarinder’s brother Malwinder Singh has announced boycott of the party campaign. However, Malwinder, who claimed to be the only genuine seeker of the ticket, he said he was open to canvassing in Talwandi Sabo.
Malwinder had shifted to the Shiromani Akali Dal before the 2012 assembly polls only to later return to Congress. “I fail to understand why, after remaining a union minister, Preneet is contesting to become an MLA. I am foreseeing a disastrous result and will take up the matter with maharaja saab (Amarinder, erstwhile maharaja of Patiala),” he commented.
After the announcement, Malwinder had left for Delhi and switched off his mobile phone. Speaking with HT over phone, he said, “I am in Delhi for tuitions of my grandchildren. This is a better job than canvassing for Preneet.”
“My grudge is genuine,” he explained, “First, she played a negative role and denied me ticket for Samana [in 2012] to allot it to son Raninder [who lost]. Now, when I was the genuine and only contender, she backstabbed me.” He said Preneet still carried the “baggage of the ill reputation of the UPA” and that it would cost the party dear. On taking up the matter with Amarinder, he said, “There is no question of truce, even if he insists.”
