With no traffic management, the roads in interior and exteriors of Patiala are groaning under huge traffic congestions every day.
The traffic chaos have aggravated with poor driving and parking. This results in long jams giving a harrowing time to commuters.
Besides traffic police, authorities of Patiala Municipal Corporation have failed to come up with any solution to give respite to commuters.
The authorities have also failed to act strictly against the defaulters who encroach roads, especially in the interiors of the city.
However, the local administration once had introduced one-way traffic system in the city last year, but due to poor implementation, it has died soon after it was introduced.
Poor maintenance of traffic police and lenient attitude of civic body towards shopkeepers took toll of the system.
The one-way traffic system was introduced to get better of the traffic jams in Anardana Chowk, Arya Samaj, Lahori Gate, Dharampura Bazar Tawkali turn, Adalat Bazar, Leela Bhawan, Lahori Gate and from Sai Market to Nabha Gate.
Though, MC has organised several meetings and clamed to make strategic plans to overcome the problem but no action has been taken till date.
Several market complexes have come up in past years, but district administration has not provided adequate parking facilities to the shopping complexes.
With increasing number of cars and two wheelers, the parking problem gets acute during school hours and in the evening.
The only proper parking facilities available in the city are in AC market, city center complex, Omaxe Mall mid town plaza parking.
"There are parking lots which are only limited to four-wheelers where as in the market arenas two wheelers parked along the road side create problems,"said Sunil, shopkeeper in Adalat Bazaar.
Violating all norms, civic body kept on passing maps of multi storey commercial units without taking note of parking space.
As per the MC rules, it is mandatory to leave adequate space for parking in commercial buildings and complexes.
Many commercial buildings use the government land for parking as there is no check on defaulters.
Sources said traffic police had recently suggested MC authorities with three suitable parking places to avoid traffic chaos in market areas.
The southern bypass on Rajpura road will somehow manage reduce vehicular traffic snarls on the roads leading to Patiala city, hope the city dwellers.
