Allegedly named in the drug racket case by Jagdish Bhola, the family of Goraya-based businessman Chunni Lal Gaba is in trouble with a special police team of Patiala police conducting raids in different districts to nab Gurjeet Singh alias Monu Gaba, second of the three sons of Chunni Lal.

Sources in Patiala police said a special team led by SP (detective) Jaskiran Singh Teja had raided Monu Gaba’s various hideouts at Phagwara, Goraya, Jalandhar and Rupnagar on June 14 and 15 and the raids were still on to nab him.

Monu runs a drug factory at Gagret in Una district of Himachal that was raided by Patiala police in February. The police had alleged that a large part of the premises was used to manufacture a chemical to make synthetic drugs.

The manager Suresh Kumar, who was arrested by police from the factory, is already in jail.

Senior police officials claimed that Monu was named as an accused in the main FIR that named former Punj ab DSP Jagdish Bhola as the main kingpin of running the drug racket across the globe with Punjab as its centre.

The police claim that FIR No 69 was re gistered at Sirhind police station on March 3, 2013 and the police said Monu had been declared a proclaimed offender in that case a few days back.

Chunni Lal and his eldest son Gurbesh, a former vicepresident of Goraya nagar panchayat, are already under the Enforcement Directorate (ED) scanner over Bhola’s statement to Punjab police, which said Chunni Lal had introduced Damanvir Singh, son of former Punjab minister Sarwan Singh Phillaur, to Delhi-based smuggler Varinder Raja.

Both Chunni Lal and Gurbesh appeared before the ED in Jalandhar on Friday and were questioned for nearly three hours.

“We are looking for Monu in the main drug racket case. He has been declared PO in this case. The rest of the details cannot be shared,” said SP (D) Patiala, Jaskaran Singh. Since Monu’s name was listed as an accused in the FIR, he went underground.

Monu’s arrest is likely to increase worries for Philaur’s son Damanvir as both reportedly shared good relations and were said to have common profitable ventures. Despite four notices, Damanvir is yet to join the investigation before the ED.
