Despite the Punjab government’s claim of carrying out developmental works in the state, the Patiala solid waste management project has been in the pipeline since 2010, when it was proposed under the tenure of then mayor Ajitpal Singh Kohli.

The 20 acre land in Dudhar village acquired by the civic body in 2013, on the basis of a blue print, is the only progress in the project.

However, the civic body had sent the proposal to state government in last December for further development, but the state authorities are yet to reply to this. With the project stuck between meetings of the Patiala municipal corporation authorities and the state government which is not taking efforts in propelling it forward, hopes of a solid waste management plant in Patiala district is fading.

With the absence of a mechanism for door-to-door collection of garbage, people dump heaps of garbage on vacant grounds, which could cause health hazards in the city. Moreover, garbage found on roads drain into sewerage lines, which lead to blockages and water logging, especially during the monsoons, thus causing inconvenience to all residents. The state will prepare a detailed project report (DPR) outlining technical and financial aspects of the project. Sources also revealed that the government had hired two companies to prepare the DPR, but both companies left it unfinished due to issues over payment.

WHAT THE PROJECT PROPOSES

The project is expected to address the issue of garbage disposal in not just Patiala but also in its satellite towns and other districts.

The plant will recycle 240 metric tonne of solid waste everyday from 26 towns. It includes door-todoor collection of garbage which will be sorted and processed at the Sanaur plant.

For over 50 years now, waste has been disposed in the open at an unauthorised dump at Sanaur road.
