Patriotic fervour marks Republic Day celebrations

The district-level 64th Republic Day was celebrated with great fervour here on Saturday. Health minister Madan Mohan Mittal unfurled the national flag and took the salute from the contingents of Punjab Police, Indo Tibetean Border Police, National Cadet Corps and others.

Speaking on the occasion, Mittal said punjab government was spending liberally to provide better health, education and social security to the citizens.

On the health front, he said, besides upgrading infrastructure, the government was providing free medicines in government hospital and free pre-natal and post-delivery care and medicines. He said the government would soon establish a world-class cancer hospital in Sangrur. He also announced to upgrade the Ghanaur civil hospital to 100 beds.

Tableaux displaying achievements of various government departments were also part of the celebrations. Students also presented a cultural show.

Mittal also honoured 24 persons for their achievements in social and government sectors.

Deputy commissioner GK Singh and SSP Gurpreet Singh Gill were also present.

Meanwhile, the Republic Day was celebrated at PSPCL head office here on Tuesday. The national flag was unfurled by chairman-cum-managing director of PSPCL KD Chaudhri, followed by a colourful cultural programme presented by corporation's artistes and students of Jai Public School.

Chaudhri highlighted the achievements of PSPCL, especially its efforts to reduce transmission and distribution losses, for which it was awarded in New Delhi. Chaudhri said the credit of went to officers and employees of PSPCL who had worked hard to achieve the targets. The CMD gave away prizes to 31 PSPCL officials for their extraordinary hard work.

Diesel Loco Modernisation Works, a production unit of Indian Railways, also celebrated the Republic Day with full enthusiasm. Chief administrative officer AK Kansal hoisted the national flag and took salute from contingents of Railway Protection Force and Bharat Scouts and Guides. Students of Kendriya Vidyalaya and DMW Public School presented a cultural programme.

Similar functions were also held at State Bank of Patiala, civil surgeon's office and many non-government organisations.
