Expressing concern over the changing climate and deteriorating environment during kisan mela at krishi Vigyan Kender, here on Wednesday, PAU vice-chancellor Baldev Singh Dhillon said stubble burning not only pollutes the air, but causes loss of precious nutrients.

The theme of the fair was "Parali Saad ke Jatta, Na Kar Sab Da Man Khatta" (Do not burn paddy straw, do not evoke people's wrath)

"Heat generated by burning paddy straw kills useful microbes in the soil leading to poor soil health and loss of soil fertility," he said.

Dhillon urged the farmers to stop burning paddy straw and adopt other alternative eco-friendly means of disposal developed by the university.

Dhillon said the purpose behind organising Kisan Melas is to have face-to-face interaction of the farmers with the university scientists for efficient exchange of knowledge.

Karamjit Kaur Danewalia, a progressive Kinnow grower and member of PAU Board of Management inaugurated the fair.

Danewalia popularly known as "Kinnow Queen" said farmers need to learn new farming technologies showcased in the kisan melas.
