Alleging mishandling on the hands of hostel warden, the students of Punjabi University on Friday staged a massive protest and locked main gate of Punjabi university for more than one hour.

The students alleged that a warden of hostel Banda Singh Bahadur hostel in university of college of Engineering , conducted a raid in hostel on Wednesday night in an inebriated state and misbehaved with the students.

Jagdeep Singh, who spearheaded the protest, alleged that during inspection in one of the rooms, the warden not only abused students but took off turban of one of the students who were sitting in their room.
"We lodged complaint with the university authorities on the night of incident but they failed to any action against warden. However, on Thursday also, they stood outside authorities' office but didn't get any satisfactory response following which they decided to block main gate of university campus", he said.

Another student Jagjot Singh alleged that this was not for the first time, the warden mishandled the students.

Meanwhile, following the assurance of university authorities to carry out proper inquiry into the matter, they stopped the protest.

The six-member committee to be chaired by dean, students' welfare, Kulbir Singh Dhillon would submit its report by Thursday. Dhillon said the committee has started investigating the matter and would come up to some logical conclusion.

"We are going to record statements of students, warden and other security staff present at the time of incident besides looking into CCTV camera footage", Dhillon said.

About allegations against warden of being drunk, Dhillon said these were counter-allegations as the warden has been alleging that students were consuming liquor at the time of raid.
