Pawan Kumar Singla of Tafzalpura, photojournalist on a Hindi daily, is charged with blackmailing government doctors.

A case of extortion, threatening to kill, and attempting to commit offences punishable with life imprisonment or other jail sentences was on Friday registered against him here. Dr Gurpal Sachdeva of Rajindra Medical College and Hospital had lodged a complaint that on April 6, Singla had called up his wife, also a government doctor, and tried to blackmail her by threatening to expose her private practice.

He threatened her with dire consequences if the couple didn't bribe him, Dr Sachdeva has said. He had even threatened to publish a malicious news item against the physician, reads the complaint.

The police went though Singla's mobile-phone call record before registering the first-information report (FIR) and beginning a manhunt for him.
