Polling remains peaceful in Sangrur

The polling for gram panchayat elections remained peaceful in Sangrur district. Around 85% turnout was recorded across different polling booths in the district.


As per available information, besides minor skirmishes, no major violent incident had been reported from any village of the district.

Sangrur deputy commissioner Kumar Rahul said peace prevailed during the polling process as people came out of their houses in large numbers to cast their vote.

Rahul said polling had not been cancelled in any polling booth in the district, while he received no complaint of indiscipline and booth capturing.

However, early in the day, polling was halted for around an hour at Bhalwan village polling booth following confusion over poll symbol of a candidate.

In another incident, a polling agent assaulted agent of opposite party at Bhullarheri village.

Meanwhile, two youths of Badshapur Mandiala village in Malerkotla received serious injuries after their car, in which they were returning after dropping voters at Malerkotla, rammed into a Canter.

Both injured were immediately rushed to Dayanand Medical Hospital, where their condition was stated to be critical.
Meanwhile, senior superintendent of police Mandeep Singh Sidhu said heavy security arrangements were made to maintain proper law and order across the district.

Turnout: 85%
No. of seats for sarpanches/elected unopposed: 599/52
No. of seats for panch members/elected unopposed: 6,098/1,606
