The police said, on Monday night, when Hakam,  his wife Gurmeet Kaur, son Yadwinder Singh and daughter-in-law were sitting in their house, Jasvir Singh, his father Gursewak Singh of Longowal village, along with their accomplices, entered their house and a verbal duel ensued.

Soon, Jasvir allegedly shot at Hakam and when Yadwinder came to the rescue of his father, he too was shot in the arm. As the villagers gathered on the spot, the assailants fled the spot.

Hakam was rushed to a local hospital, where he was declared brought dead. Yadwinder was referred to a hospital in Chandigarh.

The police have booked Jasvir, his father Gursewak and his mother Shamninder Kaur, wife Harmeet Kaur and other unidentified persons on murder charges.

"We are conducting raids to nab the accused, who are absconding," the police said.
