Punjab bypolls: Campaign ends, parties make last-ditch efforts to woo voters

The campaign for Talwandi Sabo and Patiala bypolls came to an end on Tuesday with political parties and their candidates making a last-ditch effort to woo voters throughout the day. The elections are slated for August 21.All the four major contestants, including SAD’s Jeet Mohinder Singh Sidhu, Congress’ Harminder Singh Jassi, AAP candidate Baljinder Kaur and AAP rebel Independent candidate Balkar Singh Sidhu in Talwandi went all out to woo the voters.

Following guidelines of the Election Commission prohibiting the presence of outsiders in the constituency, leaders of all political parties, who do not belong to the constituency, preferred to leave before the campaigning came to an end.

In the absence of any top leader of the party in the last leg of the campaign, SAD candidate Jeet Mohinder campaigned in the villages by addressing small gatherings.

With the AAP campaign having got a major boost after party MP Bhagwant Mann joined the campaign from Sunday onwards and the road show of the party’s convener and former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday, the party tried to carry out the momentum on the last day as Kejriwal held a road show and addressed gatherings in Talwandi Sabo town. Besides this, Mann too held meetings in villages as well as in the town.

Congress party, besides organising meetings in villages, also held a rally in Raman Mandi, the main town in the constituency after Talwandi Sabo.

PRENEET, JUNEJA ON DOOR-TO-DOOR CAMPAIGN

After extensive campaigning sessions over the last fortnight, all candidates made a final attempt to woo voters on the last day for canvassing for the Patiala Urban bypoll scheduled for August 21.

Congress candidate Preneet Kaur, in a show of strength, held a rally in the constituency, while SAD-BJP candidate Bhagwan Dass Juneja and the Aam Aadmi Party’s Harjit Singh Adaltiwala went from door-to-door to seek support.

Accompanied by husband Amarinder Singh and son Raninder Singh, Preneet mounted an open vehicle and the passed through the city, seeking votes with folded hands. CLP leader in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha Sunil Jakhar also accompanied Preneet.

After a series of rallies in his favour, addressed by Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal and deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal, SADBJP candidate Bhagwan Dass Juneja opted for a booth-level campaign. where senior leaders including Anandpur Sahib MP Prem Singh Chandumajra, cabinet ministers Surjit Singh Rakhra, Daljit Singh Cheema, CPS etc.

Muslims protest illegal control of graveyard land

Hundreds of Muslims, on Wednesday, held a protest with the body of deceased Pritam Khan, alleging that they didn't have land for the graveyard in Kakran village of Bhawanigarh sub-division of the district as the graveyard land had been illegally occupied by some people.
