Hundreds of employees working in deputy commissioner's offices in various districts of Punjab staged a protest rally here on Thursday to press their demands.
The protesters had also planned to gherao finance minister Parminder ingh Dhindsa's residence. However, they canceelled the plan after Dhindsa invited them for a meeting at his. In response to call by the Punjab Deputy Commissioner Office Employees Union, the protesters gathered at the mini secretariat here and threatened a statewide stir if their demands were not met.
The employees' demand include disbursement of pending installment of DA, upgradation of several posts in SDM offices, increase in ministerial promotion quota for Naib Tehsildar from 2 to 10 per cent, cut-down in experience for promotion to superintendent from 5 years to 2 years and recruitment against the vacant posts in the newly created district of Fazilka, other new sub-divisions and sub-tehsils.
Talking to Hindustan Times, Vijay Bahal, president of the union, said, "The government was not ready to listen our demands and we were compelled to hold the protest. The Finance Minister has now called us for a meeting but we may hold a statewide protest on February 3 in Amritsar if the talks fail".
On the shortage of employees in government offices, he said, "To fufill their poll promises, the politicians create new districts, sub-divisions and tehsils but they do not make any announcement for the appointment of new staff. This puts extra burden on the existing employees". "At present, all the newly created 23 sub-divisions in the state are facing shortage of staff. Even the state government did not create posts of SDM in newly created sub-divisions of Banga and Maur", he added
