The pending amount is for the period from January 1, 2006 to August 31, 2009.

The teachers under the banner of the Democratic Teachers' Front (DTF) have alleged that though the state government has managed to give 100 per cent arrears of the teachers of the other universities and faculty of government colleges but it has given only 80 per cent arrears to Punjabi University teachers in March last year.

"Withholding of arrears is against the government's own decision of paying the full arrears in three installments as per the finance department's notification of January 2, 2013", said Jaswinder Singh Brar, DTF's convener.

He said while the centre government had already constituted the seventh pay commission, teachers at Punjabi University are still waiting for clearance of their dues even after eight years as decided by the sixth pay commission.

"Non-release of remaining arrears is totally unjustified, unconstitutional and arbitrary and against the government's notification.

It reflects poorly on the functioning and coordination between higher education and finance departments of the state", he said.
The teachers urged the state government to release the said amount before March 31.
