Members of the Schedule Caste Student Federation (SCSF) of the Punjabi University on Wednesday sought reservation in hostels for students of schedule caste and backward categories.

Currently, hostel rooms are allotted on the basis of marks secured in graduation.
SCSF president Jitender Singh requested the university's vice-chancellor Jaspal Singh to look into the matter.

Jitender said students of these backward sections, especially girls, who came from far-off places to study, could not afford rented accomodation and were forced to discontinue studies.

Demanding that the university management reserve seats for minority groups while allotting hostels, he said, "There are not enough rooms to accommodate applicants because of which they have to shell out hefty amounts for  paying-guest accommodations," he said.

The university had earlier adopted reservation in allotting accomodation, but suspended it for undisclosed reasons, he added.

Meanwhile, the VC assured to look into matter.
