After facing criticism in Patiala for creating hurdles in setting up of a solid waste management plant, rural development minister Surjit Singh Rakhra on Thursday had to face the heat for his “non-performance” from residents at Trein village in Samana constituency, which is represented by him. Rakhra had to leave the public meeting.

As Rakhra started addressing the public meeting in favour of the SAD candidate for block samiti seat from Main zone, the villagers started raising slogans against him and asked that what has he done in the last six-year rule of the SAD.

The villagers, point-blank, told the minister not to expect votes for the Akali Dal and asked him to leave, it is learnt.

As per locals, not a single penny has been spent on the village development in the past more than five years of the SAD rule.

“The streets are in a pathetic condition and even after a little rain we cannot walk in the village. The minister had promised us to link the sewerage to a drain passing at one side of the village. Nothing has happened. You have no right to ask for votes,” villager Shinder Kaur told Rakhra, as he started addressing the gathering.

A village youth, Ranjeet Singh Jeeta, while holding Rakhra's hands asked him to take a round of the village and see if any development has been done in last five years.

“First you come with me to have a look at the village and then ask your conscience if you deserve our votes or not. Tell me one reason why you need our votes,” Jeeta questioned the minister.

Rakhra's repeated replies failed to satisfy the villagers and he had to leave the meeting at around 7 pm.

Later, the villagers held a meeting and announced to boycott the SAD in the zila parishad and block samiti elections scheduled for May 19.

Sources said the villagers were also protested against the candidature of Balwinder Kaur from the block samiti seat. “Balwinder's husband is village sarpanch and he has failed to bring any development to the village in the past,” alleged the villagers.

The residents also announced that they would not allow any senior SAD leader to canvass in the village.
