For the first time in the history of Punjabi University, a record number of 274 students will be awarded with doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees on the occasion of 37th convocation to be held on March 20 at Guru Teg Bahadur Hall here.
Vice-chancellor Jaspal Singh said this was the highest number of students being awarded the Ph.D. degrees since its establishment.
“This has become possible with certain pro-active measures taken by the university to enhance the vistas of higher education, research and to promote the culture of quality research”, he said.
The degrees will be conferred by governor Shivraj V Patil.
The syndicate also approved the V-C’s proposal for the introduction of chancellor’s medal for excellence in sports to be given for the first time to a sportsperson with outstanding performance while chancellor medal will be also given for excellence in academics.
The V-C will award gold medals to 86 toppers in the postgraduate and professional courses and 27 in the undergraduate courses.
The syndicate also gave a nod for the setting up Bhai Vir Singh chair for the promotion of modern Punjabi poetry. This will give a boost to the poetry.
