Deputy commissioner Arun Sekhri on Monday directed school and college authorities in the district to return fees collected from scheduled caste (SC) students who were admitted under the Post Matric Scholarships for Scheduled Castes scheme as the government had decided to pay the amount directly to the institutions, at a meeting at the administrative complex here.
Highlighting that strict action would be taken against the authorities who violate rules, he added that the government had recently raised the upper limit of annual income of student's family from `2 lakh to `2.5 lakh, enabling more students to avail of this scholarship.
DC also urged school authorities to get bank accounts opened in the name of those who qualify for the scholarship so that funds received from the Centre can be directly remitted.
Directing the welfare department to oversee the process, he said the scholarship would cover students studying professional courses as well as other degree programmes.
He also said that awareness should be created at grassroots level so that SC students benefit from the scheme. Students can apply for scholarship on www.punjabscholarships.gov.in.
