Former union minister for external affairs and Congress candidate for the Patiala (Urban) byelection Preneet Kaur on Thursday complained to the Election Commission of India (EC) about misuse of official machinery by the ruling Akali-BJP alliance.

She also sought deputation of additional election observers to keep a watch on the activities of the alliance government.

In separate complaints to the EC, Kaur alleged that she learnt the state government had deputed sixty intelligence inspectors of the state police-- two each in the thirty wards falling under the assembly segment-- to identify Congress workers and supporters to intimidate them so that they do not vote for the party in the ensuing elections.

Seeking deployment of additional observers, she said it was important that the elections are closely monitored.

Given the sensitivity of the bypoll, it was important that all measures be taken to pre-empt the Akali-BJP government from intimidating voters, she said.
She added that the Akali-BJP was known for intimidating people it thinks are opposed to the party.
