Raj, associated with the Congress for a long time, was stabbed to death with a sharp-edged weapon at his residence in Ajnali village last month. Raj is said to have been close to some senior police officers also. Raj's driver had discovered him lying in a pool of blood in the morning and had immediately informed his brother Ajay, who called the police.  Ajay had claimed that his brother had no personal animosity with anyone.

Raj was responsible for getting a man convicted in a murder case by the local court: he was a key witness in the case. The convict was later accorded bail by the Punjab and Haryana high court.

Raj had been provided with a security guard a couple of days before his murder, but the latter was not present at the time of the incident as he used to leave during at night. At the time of the murder, the victim was sleeping in a house adjacent to where his family lived.

Fatehgarh Sahib senior superintendent of police HS Mann confirmed that the police had succeeded in solving the murder on Thursday. He said the police would soon disclose the name of the accused and the motive behind the murder.
