State honours city girl for stint in Summer Deaflympics

Keeping the promise of state government to provide financial aid to Patiala girl Parul Gupta (16), hearing-impaired tennis player, information and public relations and revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia on Tuesday presented the player with a cheque of R2 lakh at her residence.

Parul had represented the country at the 22nd edition of Summer Deaflympics held at Sofia in Bulgaria from July 26 to August 4. Parul and had defeated USA in a mixed doubles match.

Majithia handed over the cheque to Parul and encouraged her to pursue advanced training in lawn tennis.

Parul's father demanded a government job for her daughter when she turns 18 from the minister.

Majithia assured that the state government would extend all possible help to Parul.

"Parul has brought laurels not only to Punjab, but also to India at the international level. The entire country is proud of her,"said Majithia.

After her first stint at international podium Parul is presently preparing for the US World Open Lawn Tennis Championship for deaf and dumb to be held in 2014 and Deaf and Dumb Olympics scheduled to be held in Istanbul in 2017.

Majithia said after implementing a comprehensive sports policy, Punjab has set up basic infrastructure for sports by spending more than `200 crore.

He added that the sportspersons would get recognition in their spheres besides getting reservation in the government jobs as the state has implemented 3% quota.

"We have honoured the winners of Asian and Commonwealth Games with cash prizes of `7.54 crore. `6.50 crore was awarded to the winner team of 3rd World Cup Kabbadi. Special prize worth `51-lakh, `31-lakh and `21-lakh to the top three teams of women category.

"With a view to encourage the sportspersons, the cash amount for Maharaja Ranjit Singh award has been enhanced from `one lakh to `two lakh and as many as 67 sports persons have been given `1.34 crore recently,"he said.

Rural development and panchayat minister Surjit Singh Rakhra, deputy commissioner GK Singh and senior superintendent of police Hardayal Singh Mann were also present at the occasion.
