Stray animals such as dogs, cows and bulls have increasingly become a menace in the city as they have led to frequent road accidents, especially on the Rapura and the Sirhind roads.

In October last year, two girls were killed in an accident on the Patiala-Sangrur road, while trying to avoid hitting a stray dog.

Recently, a car was damaged when it crashed into a divider on Sirhind road after being hit by a stray cow.

The bovines, seen standing on the middle of even national highways, pose a serious threat to the passers-by also.

In spite of repeated complaints, the district administration and the local civic body failed to come up with measures to counter the problem. The municipal corporation had even announced many times that it would curb the problem, but the authorities are yet to come up with a concrete plan.

The local MP and Aam Aadmi Party leader Dr Dharmvira Gandhi mentioned the problem in his memo of demands, which he handed over to the MC authorities on his surprise visit to the MC's sangat darshan on Tuesday.

The problem appears to be especially prevalent in the areas of SST Nagar, Model Town, Gian Colony, Sewak Colony, TB Hospital road, Rajpura road, Sirhind road, Bus Stand road, Passey road, Sherawala Gate, Chhoti Baradari, Anardana Chowk, Safabade Gate, Arya Samaj and sabzi mandi.

Secretary general of the NGO Society for Peoples' Welfare and Awareness Patiala (SPWAP), Dr DS Bhullar, had lodged a complaint against the municipal corporation for their inaction against the stray dog menace. The MC still failed to act in the matter. The NGO had also staged a dharna protesting the civic body's negligent attitude.

Besides the problem within the MC's jurisdiction, the situation in the peripheral areas appears more severe.
