The wall around Sunam's ancient Sitasar Mandir, which drove a wedge between two communities, was completed on Tuesday under tight security and administration's supervision here.

Sunam, 15 km from here, remained tense the entire day after police on Monday had injured nearly 10 people in baton charge to pervent any communal clash at the construction site. Deputy commissioner Kumar Rahul and senior superintendent of police Harcharan Singh Bhullar camped at the spot and met with representatives of both groups, insisting that peace must prevail.

The group opposing the construction of the wall raised slogans against the administration when the work began on Tuesday morning under the supervision of subdivisional magistrate Gurtej Singh and deputy superintendent of police Jaskiranjit Singh Teja. "After that, the matter was resolved and both parties pacified," said DC Kumar Rahul. "We decided to complete the wall to avoid any confrontation in future."

High security will remain in the town for more days. The wall had collapsed during heavy rain a few days ago. The police had stalled its re-construction after four days, after the matter became sensitive and one group claimed that the project was illegal becasue it was on a land shared with a gurdwara.
