The Punjabi University authorities on Monday transferred the teacher who was accused of slapping a research scholar.

The teacher, Gurjant Singh of Punjabi department, has been shifted to University College of Engineering (UCE), situated in the campus only. The Punjabi University Research Scholar Association (PURSA), however, had been demanding his dismissal.

Vice-chancellor Jaspal Singh ordered transfer on the basis of report of the five-member fact-finding committee. The committee, in its report submitted on Wednesday last week, had found the teacher on the wrong foot.

On February 28 evening, Gurjant, a teacher in Punjabi department, allegedly slapped and abused Harpreet Singh, a research scholar of the same department.

After the issue snowballed, students staged protests, demanding dismissal of the teacher.

Meanwhile, PURSA has showed satisfaction over the transfer of the teacher.

"The issue was to be settled at one point or the other. Besides, transfer, the teacher has been issued warning that if he repeats similar kind of mistakes in future, he will not be spared. It's our win. Moreover, aggrieved research scholar is also satisfied with the action," said PURSA president Inderjeet Singh.
