The captured men include two who helped BKI terrorists Paramjit Singh Beora and Jagtar Singh Hawara, assassins of chief minister Beant Singh, break out of the Burail jail in 2004 and find shelter. “We have seized arms and ammunition from them,” senior superintendent of police Hardial Singh Mann told the media on Tuesday.

Gurdeep Singh of Fatehgarh Sahib; Amarjit Singh of Patiala district; Jasvir Singh, Samardeep Singh, and Sucha Singh of SAS Nag ar; and Harjinder Singh of Burail (Union Territory of Chandigarh) are the accused under arrest. “Jasvir and Gurdeep helped Bheora and Hawara in jailbreak,” said the SSP.

Gurdeep, whom Hawara had appointed area commander of Babbar Khalsa International in Fatehgarh Sahib district, is wanted in 13 cases, including terrorist activities, robbery, drug offences, and attempt to murder. Jasvir was Bheora’s conduit, and Delhi Police had arrested them together in 2006 with a shipment of foreign arms and ammunition.

“Gurdee p, Amarjit, and Jasvir were out on bail and trying to revive terrorism in the state,” said the SSP, adding: “They had motivated some people with criminal history to join their terrorist module. Their plan was to kill Baba Bhaniarawala, who is a target for Sikh radicals.”

The module had received one set of weapons from Uttar Pradesh and was expecting the second through the UP-Nepal smuggling route. The police claim to have seized a rifle, three pistols and a cartridge from them and lodged a case at Banur.
