Three members of a family have died of gastroenteritis in five days in a Ward No 29 locality here.

The matter came to light after the death of Mohan Singh (65), a resident of Raj Colony, on Wednesday. His brother Varinder Pal Singh (45) died due to gastroenteritis on June 25, while Mohan’s son Baljit Singh (25) succumbed to the disease at a private hospital on June 26.

Six others, including two young women from the same family, are also being treated for gastroenteritis in different hospitals of the city.

Mohan’s daughters Meenuand Gurmeet Kaur were undergoing treatment at a private hospital after they showed symptoms of severe gastroenteritis on Wednesday.

The victims’ neighbours, including Rahul (20), a physically-handicapped youth; Rupali (13), Binder Kaur (45), Gyaprasad (45) and Soma (55), are also getting treatment for gastroenteritis in different hospitals.

The supply of contaminated water is purportedly said to be the main reason behind gastro outbreak in the colony.

Despite three deaths, the health department and Patiala municipal corporation have not bothered to visit the area to take water samples.

Civil surgeon Dr HS Bali said they came to know about the deaths on Wednesday and have rushed a team to inquire the matter.

“Our team will seek details to find out the exact cause of the deaths. Water samples will be collected and sent to laboratories. If required, we will also carry out a door-to-door survey in the area to find out if there are any new cases so that timely medical assistance is given to them,” he said.

Patiala MP Dr Dharamvira Gandhi also visited the area and expressed condolences with the aggrieved family. “I have been continuously alerting the municipal corporation over poor civic amenities but they refuse to come out of slumber,” he said.
