Industrial town of Mandi Gobindgarh is known as 'Steel Town' of India and its municipal council is among the richest municipalities of the state. But the Transport Nagar set up by the council in 2005 is not serving its purpose.

Punjab's then finance minister Capt Kanwaljit Singh had laid the foundation stone of a truck stand in Chattarpura village in December 2001 and it was inaugurated by then local government minister Choudhary Jagjit Singh in October 2005.

When the minister inaugurated the Transport Nagar with the cost of around Rs. 3 crore on around seven-acre land, he had announced that it would provide parking space to 750 trucks.

Later, the municipal council later had auctioned various commercial sites including booths, showrooms in the Transport Nagar but it was not allotted as the council had failed to provide basic infrastructure.

Even a big scam came to fore over construction of the Transport Nagar, when Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, after receiving some complaints, had marked inquiry in 2007.

After the inquiry, an embezzlement of Rs. 93.73 lakh was detected in construction of truck stand at Mandi Gobindgarh . After the CM's directions, state vigilance department, measurement, PWD, quality control wing of local bodies department conducted through inquiry.

It was found during the enquiry that there was 13%- 34% shortfall in use of material in comparison to the required specifications. Though the CM had taken serious note of corruption the construction of the truck stand and ordered strict action under relevant provisions of law against the erring officials and the contractors but the basic purpose of the truck stand is yet to serve.

Even after so many years, the Transport Nagar is not fully developed. Hundreds of trucks are still parked on GT Road, Mandi Gobindgarh leading to traffic congestion.

Voicing concern

Ranjit Singh, truck driver
There is no security in Transport Nagar. We feel insecure at night. Municipal council should provide sitting arrangement for drivers in transport nagar.

Manjit
The municipal council should develop the infrastructure of Transport Nagar otherwise it will not serve its purpose.

Surjit
Roads leading to Transport Nagar are in poor condition. MC should repair them immediately.

Harpal Singh Nasrali, president, MC, Mandi Gobindgarh
Efforts are being made to provide all the basic facilities to drivers. Transport Nagar will be developed soon.
