Even as the police focus more on the larger drug racket than the alleged involvement of Olympic medallist Vijender Singh, the probe so far has found that the Bhiwani boxer twice visited alleged druglord NRI Anoop Singh Kahlon’s house in Zirakpur to pick up heroin.

“The mobile phone locations and call details of Vijender and Kahlon are enough proof that Vijender used to visit Kahlon’s Zirakpur house often. First in December and then in February, Vijender flew in from Delhi – where he and his wife lives mostly -- to Chandigarh, and then went to adjoining Zirakpur for the contraband. He went back within hours,” a highly placed source told HT.

It is alleged that even during his training camps at the National Institute of Sports (NIS) at Patiala, Vijender talked to Kahlon on his phone regularly. Sources said it was on February 26 that the boxer last talked to Kahlon, who was arrested along with an accomplice on March 3 in Fatehgarh Sahib and has led the police to huge hauls of drugs and at least four more gang members. Kahlon had named Vijender and the latter’s fellow boxer Ram Singh as his “customers”. Ram has allegedly confessed to have bought and consumed heroin along with Vijender.

However, Fatehgarh Sahib senior superintendent of police (SSP) Hardial Singh Mann underlined that while Vijender may have consumed heroin, he has not been found involved in the trade: “As of now, nothing has come out in the police investigation which shows that Vijender was part of the racket.”

Vijender has acknowledged that he had met Kahlon but has denied any drug links.

Hence, the police do not seem to be in a hurry to summon Vijender. “More than the Vijender link, our priority is to arrest people involved in the international racket,” said a top police functionary.
