Shiromani Akali Dal president and deputy chief minister of Punjab Sukhbir Singh Badal on Sunday urged the residents to vote for a candidate who had devoted himself to people's welfare rather than a 'trophy MLA'.

Badal's remark was aimed at Amritsar member of Parliament (MP) and former chief minister (CM) Captain Amarinder Singh. Campaigning in the city for SAD-BJP candidate Bhagwan Dass Juneja, he attacked the Patiala royals at their home bastion.

"You can put trophies in the showcase, but cannot use them. Patiala residents are facing a similar situation for the past 15 years as they have an MLA, who has never been spotted in public." He also said the Captain had remained inaccessible and failed to bring any projects to the region.

While Amarinder was an absentee legislator who never raised issues relating to Patiala in the assembly, Preneet was failed to listen to grievances of the residents, Badal alleged.
He further said the royal family always appealed to the Patialvis during elections, but quit caring about them once voted to power.

"Many areas of the city lack basic amenities in spite of the fact that the Patiala MLA was the CM for five years and the MP was a cabinet minister in the UPA government," he added.

Addressing about a dozen rallies in favour of Juneja, Badal asked voters to compare the SAD-BJP and Congress candidates.

Saying that the days of "rajas and maharajas" were over, he urged the people to vote for a candidate with a vision for the city.

"We elect candidates so that they can help us when needed. Juneja is from you and is always accessible, but do you think you can call Preneet Kaur at odd hours? They are not even accessible during the day," remarked Badal.
