Police here on Sunday booked a resident of Kubarwal village in Sangrur district for allegedly raping his married neighbour.

The police said the matter came to light after the victim tried to end her life following threats from the accused. The woman has been admitted to a hospital in Barnala.

Police said that the woman had alleged that the accused, identified as Avtar Singh, was her neighbour and forced her into a physical relationship with him two year ago.

She alleged that Avtar had raped her four months ago and threatened of killing her son. On Saturday, the accused allegedly visited the victim's house and threatened her. The police said that fearing that her husband had come to know about the accused, she swallowed a poisonous substance and tried to commit suicide.

She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where her condition is said to be stable.
