PAU releases varieties of vegetables for commercial cultivation

Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) released several varieties of vegetables for commercial cultivation in Punjab. The vegetables include four varieties of tomato and one variety each of chilli, broccoli, radish, brinjal and garlic.

Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) released several varieties of vegetables for commercial cultivation in Punjab. The vegetables include four varieties of tomato and one variety each of chilli, broccoli, radish, brinjal and garlic.

The varieties were approved for general cultivation during a meeting of state variety approval committee for vegetable and floriculture, held under the chairmanship of Gurkanwal Singh, director of horticulture, Punjab. According to Balwinder Singh, director of research and RS Sidhu, director of extension education, PAU, features of the vegetable varieties were discussed thoroughly.

The plants of chilli variety (CH-27) are tall and continue to bear fruits for a long time. Fruits are medium long (6.7 cm), thin skinned, light green when immature and deep red when mature. The hybrid is resistant to leaf curl virus, fruit rot and root knot nematodes, and tolerant to sucking pests such as mite. Its average fruit weight is 3.6g and yield of red ripe fruits is 96q/ acre. It is suitable for processing /powder making.

Punjab Varkha Bahar 4 of tomato is a determinate variety with green and dense foliage. Its average height is 85 cm. Its fruits are firm, round and uniform in ripening with an average fruit weight of 90g.It is suitable for cultivation in rainy/autumn season and is resistant to leaf curl virus. Its TSS is 3.6% and lycopene content is 3.13 mg/100g of fresh weight. Its average yield is 245q/acre.

The plants of tomato variety are indeterminate in growth habit. Its fruits are oval, medium sized (90g), firm with pointed tip and 2-3 locules. Fruits are borne in clusters of 8-9 with TSS content of 5.5% and lycopene content of 4.9 mg per 100g. Its first picking is possible 120 days after transplanting and it gives early yield (harvested till end of March) of 247q/acre and total yield of 934q/acre. The variety is suitable for protected cultivation under polynet house.

The plants of tomato variety are indeterminate in growth habit with dark green foliage. Its fruits are round, medium sized (85g) and firm with 3-4 locules. Fruits are borne in clusters of 5-6 with TSS content of 5.7% and lycopene content of 5.3 mg per 100g.

Its first picking is possible 117 days after transplanting and it gives early yield (harvested till end of March) of 254 q/acre and total yield of 898q/ acre. The variety is tolerant to leaf curl virus and suitable for protected cultivation under polynet house.

The plant growth of broccoli variety is semi-spreading. Its leaves are smooth, large and dark green. Its head is round, compact and green with an average weight of 300g. It takes 70-75 days from transplanting to harvesting, and its average yield is 72q/acre.

PBH 4 of brinjal is an early maturing F1 hybrid of long fruit group of brinjal. Its plants are medium in height, compact, thornless with green foliage. Its flowers are purple, borne in clusters and its fruits are long, medium sized, shining and purple black with green calyx. Its average yield is 267q/acre.

The plants of garlic variety (PG18) have soft-neck (nonbolting) with green leaves. Its bulbs are large (4.55 cm diameter), attractive and white with average bulb weight of 28.4g. Its cloves are medium to large sized, white and average clove number of 26 per bulb. It has dry matter of 38% and allicin content of 1.15%. Its average yield is 51q/acre.
