Dilapidated roads, lack of facilities at hostels, unhygienic toilets and old buildings - the list of problems plaguing Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) for the past several years is long enough. The varsity authorities, however, have conveniently turned a blind eye to all these problems and are busy shelling out `14 lakh on the construction of a new gate.

JS Mahal, who is heading the project, said: "A committee was formed under vice-chancellor BS Dhillon to construct this gate that will be given a 'Mughal' touch and will cost `14 lakh."

The gate being constructed for the past several months at the university's main entrance (known as gate number 1) has invited criticism from several faculty members and students, who feel the authorities could have used the funds for developing basic infrastructure.
