The menace of beggars is on a rise, not only in the city, but also on the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) campus. Students claim that they have been facing trouble in the university for the past few months, but all their complaints to the authorities concerned have fallen on deaf ears.

Swaranjit Singh, a student, says it is embarrassing to see beggars in the university, who leave no stone unturned to chase students and visitors till they get some money out of them.

“We often discuss with each other, that the number of beggars is rising with advancing days. They openly roam around wherever they feel like, especially near the campus canteens. The authorities are hardly bothered to curb their entrance inside the campus”, he says, further adding, “Many a times, we also have international delegations who visit the varsity. They also notice them begging around. Does this give a good impression of our university?”

Another student, Harpreet Bains, shares a similar view. He says, “The worst scenario is in the canteens where they keep troubling us while we are having our meals or snacks. They go on to beg and not just ask us for money, but also for food. To get rid of them, we often give them some portion of our meals. And if we do not give them anything, they curse us”.
