Contrary to the claims of the SAD-BJP government that huge funds were being made available for the welfare of the poor in the state, a number of shagun scheme beneficiaries have been waiting their cheques for the last two years.

According to sources, as many as 170 beneficiaries, who married off their daughters in 2012 and 2013, and more than 500 cases of 2014 in Fazilka alone have been still waiting for the payment of Shagun money.Ram Chander, a resident of Dhanni Heera Wali in Abohar, a sub-division of Fazilka district rued that his two daughters were married on December 12, 2012, but despite several requests, he has not been paid the money under the scheme so far.

"After so many hardships, I managed to get my daughter married on February 8, but the authorities just put them off as and when I asked for the shagun cheques, alleged Ashok Kumar of Bhagwanpura of Abohar.

Expressing concern over the delay in payment, Congress MLA from Abohar and leader of Opposition Sunil Kumar Jakhar, demanding immediate payment of shagun money, said, "The delay was surprising as minister for welfare of SCs and BCs Gulzar Singh Ranike had announced in the last assembly session that adequate funds had been released under the shagun scheme."
