The police, on Friday, arrested four people after 2,400 boxes containing 28,880 bottles of illicit country-made liquor, loaded in two trucks, were seized by a team of the excise and taxation department from them.
The trucks were stopped at Maur chowk in Rampura Phul by a team of the officials of the excise and taxation department at about 9am.
Those arrested have been identified as Beer Singh and Sukhwinder Singh, residents of Talwandi Bhai in Kapurthala district, and Hardeep Singh and Jai Mal from Mansoor Wala also in Kapurthala district. The liquor bottles bore the brand name Mota Santra.
Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Sukhdev Singh, deputed with the excise and taxation department, said that the people could not produce any document to substantiate the legality of the liquor consignment, so they were handed over to the police. A case under the excise Act has been registered against them.
"The seized liquor is worth Rs 8.50 lakh as per government rates and will be of much more value in the market. The accused seem to be supplying the liquor in black market in Bathinda and adjacent areas," he said. The modus operandi of the accused and the involvement of any other people in the racket will be clear only after their interrogation.
