Members of the Democratic Teachers' Front (DTF) of Punjabi University has condemned the statement issued by AS Chawla, university's registrar, regarding the delay in salary to the university employees.

In his statement, Chawla attributed the financial crisis of the university to the "steep hike in salaries of teachers and non-teaching staff" and said there was no financial mess.

Jaswinder Singh Brar, convener of the DTF, said the salaries had been revised all over India, including Punjab, according to the norms set by the pay commissions and Punjabi University was no exception to it.

"There is no financial problem in the GNDU, Amritsar, which also pays salaries and allowances as per the norms set by the UGC and pay commissions. Punjabi University not only defaulted in the payment of salaries but also allowances of employees amounting to crores of rupees are pending," he added.

The members of the DTF also demanded the immediate withdrawal of the statement by the registrar and urged the vice chancellor of university to intervene and stop the university officials from issuing such "anti-teacher and anti-employee statements".
