In an attempt to provide safe environment to girl students and women employees, Punjabi University authorities have started a toll-free helpline number 1800-2740-070 to hear their grievances and extend help to them in case of emergencies.
The facility will be available round the clock.
At a meeting with the security staff, vice-chancellor Dr Jaspal Singh said the university was committed to providing safe environment for girl students and all other women at the campus and was resolved to install various tools and gadgets to ensure their safety.
Security officer Captain (retd) Gurtej Singh said to make the surveillance more brisk and feisty, especially during the evening hours, the university has installed IP-based high resolution close circuit cameras at sensitive points, in addition to high beam search lights.
"To make the security staff more vigilant and self-assured, a gender-sensitisation team has also been set up which will work with the help of the university's women study centre", he said.
Singh added that on the lines of the Punjab Police, the women security guard mobile patrol parties have been formed for intensive patrolling at sensitive and susceptible points.
"A new woman security supervisor has also been appointed for the first time to see women-related security arrangements and the walkie-talkie system of security has also been made more reliable", he said.
Taking a serious note of traffic hazards in the university campus, Singh informed that measures are also being taken to ease out traffic snarls which have doubled due to the increasing number of motor vehicles over the years.
