Members of the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union (PCCTU) from Jalandhar and Kapurthala held a protest against the alleged government apathy towards higher education outside the DAV Ayurvedic College here on Wednesday.

Addressing the protesters, Tejinder Virli, area secretary of the union and district president, said that the entire education system in the state was going haywire due to directionless policies of the state government.

Union secretary Prof VK Sareen said teachers were facing a lot problems as their salaries have not been released for the last 18 months due to non-release of the grants to the colleges by the government . He said many institutions were on the brink of closure due to the financial crunch.

He said the other demands of teachers included security of service of teachers working against unaided posts, arrears under the Career Advancement Scheme for DPEs and librarians and implementation of UGC guidelines regarding relaxation in refresher courses, pension and gratuity scheme for teachers, etc.

The teachers also wanted the government to fill posts of teachers in schools and colleges.
