PCCTU polls: Jagwant-Walia group retains hold over teachers' union

Candidates of the Jagwant-Walia group were elected unopposed in the annual elections to the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers' Union (PCCTU).

The elections were held at Doaba College, Jalandhar, on Sunday. However the results were officially declared on Monday at Amritsar by the organisation's newly-elected general secretary, Prof HS Walia. As per norms, the general secretary has the authority to make the results public.

Prof Kuldip Singh of Guru Nanak College, Doraha, Ludhiana was elected to the post of president while Prof Walia of DAV College, Amritsar was elected the general secretary. Other office bearers are given below:

Vice-president: Prof Jagwant Singh (S D College, Chandigarh)

Finance secretary: Prof V K Sareen (DAV College, Jalandhar)

GNDU area secretary: Prof Vinay Sophat (R K Arya College, Nawan Shahar)

Panjab University area secretary: Prof Jaswant Singh (S D College, Hariana, Hoshiarpur)

Punjabi University area secretary: Prof Avtar Singh (Khalsa College, Anandpur Sahib)

Besides, twelve executive members were also elected. They are Prof J S Arora, Prof Mukhwinder Singh, Prof Iqbal Singh Sandhu, Prof Surjeet Singh, Prof Jaspal Singh, Prof Balbir Singh, Prof Gurmej Singh Maan, Prof Pargan Singh, Prof Gurnam Singh, Prof Jagdeep Singh, Prof Priyatosh, Prof Shaminder Sandhu
Prof Walia said that the state government should immediately accept the just and genuine demands of the teachers which included release of pending grants meant for the payment of salaries, lifting the ban on recruitments imposed in 2005, bringing the teachers working against unaided posts under the umbrella of security of service act, implementation of pension and gratuity scheme and relaxing refresher course conditions as per the UGC guidelines.
