Barring couple of minor incidents of violence in Dinanagar and Gurdaspur, the Majha region witnessed complete and peaceful bandh on Wednesday, even as the Centre later in the day put on hold the hanging of Balwant Singh Rajoana, a convict in the Beant Singh murder case, on March 31.

Following the bandh call given by various Sikh organisations demanding the cancellation of death penalty of Rajoana, hundreds of activists of the Sikh organisations were seen moving all around the city.

Many Sikh youths wearing saffron turbans and sporting saffron flags on the vehicles moved around the city and asked the shopkeepers and other establishments to close down.

Every shop remained closed in the city. Even petrol pumps, banks and educational institutes were closed, hitting normal life.

With Hall gate being the central point, activists of various Sikh Organisations assembled there and raised provocative slogans against both the state and the union government.

The protesters also raised slogans in favour of Balwant Singh Rajoana and demanded his freedom.

Normally, the city, which sees a lot of buzz, gave a sleepy image as every bazaar and street gave a deserted look. Many shops and residential buildings were seen sporting saffron flags to show their support against the death penalty.

The national highway was also blocked in the day and not many buses were seen commuting on the roads.
Representatives of various Sikh organisations, including Sikh Students' Federation (Mehta) group, took out a march in various parts of the city to show their support for Rajoana. Throughout the day, there was heavy presence of police and the paramilitary forces in the city.
