A delegation of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) comprising senior party leaders will approach the Union government to raise farmers’ issues.
A decision to this affect was taken at a specially convened meeting of the SAD core committee held at the residence of chief minister Parkash Singh Badal in Chandigarh on Thursday.
In a statement, SAD general secretary Harcharan Bains said there was a strong feeling among the core committee members that the party and the state government should jointly bring the problems being faced by Punjab farmers in the Union government’s notice.
The meeting, chaired by SAD president Sukhbir Badal, was of the view that there should be “a major initiative in the form of a liberal economic dispensation” by the Centre to resolve farmers’ problems in Punjab. Bains said the meeting also reviewed steps being taken by SAD leaders to oversee paddy procurement.
Ranjit Singh Brahmpura, Tota Singh, Balwinder Singh Bhunder, Avtar Singh Makkar, Sewa Singh Sekhwan, Sikander Singh Maluka, Mahesh Inder Singh Grewal, Prem Singh Chandumajra, Daljit Singh Cheema and Balwant Singh Ramoowalia also attended the meeting.
