The city witnessed a heavy downpour in Phagwara on Saturday. Local MLA Som Parkash stepped out in the rain and visited various localities to conduct a surprise inspection of the drainage system on the roads.
This surprise move by the MLA came after increasing complaints of bad sewerage system by city residents. At 9.30 am, the MLA with city mayor Arun Khosla and local BJP supporters took a walking tour of various roads for around 30 minutes.
They visited the Gaushala Bazar, Guru Nanak Market, and Cinema road. Interestingly, during the tour, the MLA himself slipped on a waterlogged road but managed to balance himself and avoided a fall.
A heavy rainfall lasting for over three hours brought the illpreparedness of the municipal corporation (MC) Phagwara in tackling the aftermath of the rain to the fore, as city residents faced flood-like situation in the city due to poor drainage systems.
Areas like Gaushala Bazar, Hargobind Nagar, Patel Nagar, Old Post Office road, New Model Town and Khera road were among the worst affected roads, making it difficult for people to pass through.
Amanpreet Singh, a shopkeeper at Gaushala Bazar, attributed Saturday’s mess to MC’s failure to take precautionary measures like proper timely cleaning of the sewerage.
Meanwhile, mayor Arun Khosla said, “To solve the water flooding situation, we will install new sewerage pipes at Gaushala Bazar in a few days. Two supersucker machines will also be installed on Hoshiarpur road.”
