Phagwara native NRI shot dead in Philippines

A Manila-based NRI was shot dead near his house by two armed assailants riding a motorcycle in Longopur area of Manila in Philippines on Monday, reports reaching Phagwara said on Wednesday.

A Manila-based NRI was shot dead near his house by two armed assailants riding a motorcycle in Longopur area of Manila in Philippines on Monday, reports reaching here said on Wednesday.


Sarwan Kumar, father of deceased NRI Sham Lal,said the latter along with his siblings Chander Kumar and Surinder Kumar and their respective families was residing in Manila for the last several years.

It was learnt that Chander and Surinder informed their father Sarwan on phone about the brutal murder of Sham Lal. Sham was in money-lending business was returning home after making daily collections on a motorcycle when two armed assailants stopped him, opened fire at him and fled.

The deceased is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son. Over 100 Punjabis have been killed in the Philippines in the past few years, most of them belonging to the Doaba region.
